Lodging
The Inn of the Governors is right downtown. A lot of local people have their relatives/guests stay there. It's pretty affordable and very accommodating. You'd be able to walk to dinner, etc. Stayed here and at Santa Fe Suites on my Santa Fe (May 2011) trip.
Ten Thousand Waves is awesome. It is about a 10 minute drive from town. You would probably need a car if you stay at the Waves. Especially, if you wanted to see the area at all.
Transportation
You have three choices for transportation from the Sunport :) 1. rent a car -- pretty inexpensive, most convenient and a time-saver. 2. take the Sandia Shuttle -- somewhat convenient and probably for two the same as a car rental. 3. Ride the Rail Runner -- It's no BART -- so not sure that the times/connecting shuttles would work. It's the cheapest, most enviro friendly and, if you stay at the Inn of the Governors, you wouldn't need a car.
